With an altitude of around 1650 m, the park is in a climate zone of semi-dessert or savanna in the Central Rift Valley. Annual rainfall is ranging between 500 and 700 mm.

The active volcanic activity provides many hot springs, as a result of geological faults in this part of the Rift Valley. The springs have curative effect for a number of dermatological and respiratory diseases. More than 150 bird species are recorded on the lakes and the surrounding savanna hills near the lodge, 436 bird species in the entire Park.

Lake Chitu is a pea colored Crater Lake, 0.8 km2 and 21 m deep. Blue green alga provide food for more than 10000 flamingos throughout the year and has a highly saline nature.

Lake Shalla is one of the deepest lakes in Africa, 266 m on a surface of 329 Km2 with a very alkaline content. Several of the islands are protected breeding sites for birds.
